Turn It to the Left / The American Academy of Audiology's rap on noise-induced hearing loss

Recognizing that the risk of permanent hearing loss from noise exposure is very real for individuals of all ages, the American Academy of Audiology has undertaken a campaign to raise public awareness about the dangers of exposure to high-level sound and to raise funds in support of noise-induced hearing loss research.

RAP MAMA

This past weekend, RRR was at the Boston Health Expo exhibiting with the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Institute presentation on Noise-Induced Hearing Loss. Tommy Boots was there to perform “Turn it to the Left,” and Robbie, Ellen, and I walked through the crowd talking with people about what we do.  We made a lot of great connections, and people were infatuated with Tommy Boots, who’s a very endearing and charismatic character.

What was interesting to me was the visual reaction that I got from people when I told them what company I was there representing.  Granted, as a blonde, 38 yr old, I’m not the most likely representative for rap.  Still, I always feel like I’m still pretty cool when I mention that I work for educationalrap.com, and that I sing on Figurative Language.  Score points for the middle-aged vocalist!

On the flip side of that, I’m also a stepmother to two teenage children.  It’s with honest enthusiasm that I’m able to speak to people about RRR and the educational benefits, because I see them at work first-hand.  How cool was I when I introduced a rap about the 44 Presidents to my stepson’s 8th grade class?  (Note that this was through his teacher, as to not have him pass out from the embarrassment of me actually being present in the classroom.)  It’s really rewarding to watch him listen, learn, and remember concepts and President names and know that I am part of the team that creates something so “hip.”  In fact, I think I need a RRR rapper name too.  For right now, it’s just taunia@educationalrap.com.  Word.

Thanks to the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Institute for having us as part of their presentation!
