LAS VEGAS A Las Vegas teacher is using the NCAA College Basketball Tournament to teach math to her students.

For Goolsby Elementary School third grade teacher Lisette Garcia-Kohler sports is a way of life. It’s quickly taking over her classroom and her students are catching the spirit.

Garcia-Kohler is turning the three week long championship tournament into one giant math lesson. She says math can be found in every game. “(Students) are adding, subtracting, finding out point totals, doing differences, doing fractions and finding out the equivalent of fractions.” Garcia-Kohler said.

Just like the tournament, her classroom was dived into four regions.  Each student then picked a team to follow out of the field of 65. They watch or read about the games and chart their progress. The kids also learn fractions as they follow who gets knocked out of the tournament.

Other teachers are also feeling the tournament fever. “We get to do a lot math and do a lot of graphing,” third grade teacher Megan Stewart said.  She says kids are also learning about colleges by visiting their respective teams’ websites.

Garcia-Kohler believes the journey to success includes a love of math and a little basketball.
